Club 27 is considered to be a positive number if numerology is to be believed. It is associated with deeper understanding and self-control. But unfortunately, as history has been a witness, 27 has proven to be connected to sudden deaths of artists at that age, majorly due to drug abuse, alcohol poisoning, suicide, and other repelling ways. These are the artists who’ll forever remain 27, who have hence joined, as popular culture terms it, Club 27.
1) Amy Winehouse
Amy Winehouse was an inspiring role model for many philanthropists. She believed in giving back to society by being a part of campaigns for Children’s welfare, Breast Cancer Awareness and many more. But, this side of Winehouse was known to very few. She was a very successful musician and singer. Being the first British woman to win five Grammys including Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, she was an unstoppable avalanche of creativity. Alas! All this came with a heavy price for Winehouse, her drug problems threatened her career. She was refused to perform at the Grammys due to a failed drug test. These problems took over her eventually and Amy Winehouse was found dead on 23rd July 2011, at 3.54 PM due to alcohol poisoning. As she passed away, her album posthumously became UK’s best-selling album of the 21st Century. Her death led to the setting up of the Amy Winehouse Foundation by her family to help teens and young adults vulnerable to such addictions. Winehouse has been paid tributes by many great artists of our time namely Bruno Mars, Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, etc. She always has and always will continue to live in our hearts.
2) Kurt Cobain
For decades, the death of Kurt Cobain has cast a dark shadow within the world of music lovers especially the children of the 90s. Cobain found an unimaginable amount of success as his band, Nirvana had their first hit “It smells like teen spirit”. But, it wasn’t success which caused his death. Kurt was known to enjoy drugs since the age of 13. He indulged in marijuana and any kinds of drugs and also became prone to alcoholism and solvent abuse. A cousin of his brought attention towards a history of mental illness in the family with both his uncles having shot themselves and suicided. Cobain’s heroin overdose started affected Nirvana’s performances. An incident cited was before performing in New York City, Cobain suffered from heroin overdose but instead of calling for an ambulance, Love injected him with ‘naloxone’ and he continued performing like nothing had happened. Kurt’s first suicide attempt took place on March 3, 1994, as he overdosed himself on a combination of Champagne and Rohypnol. Cobain was then put into a detox program, in vain and he climbed a six-foot-high fence to escape from the premises. He was not found even after an extensive search by Love on April 6th. And on April 8th, 1994, Cobain was found dead with a gun near him and high doses of heroin inside his body. He left a suicide note for his imaginary childhood friend ‘Boddah’, stating that for years now he had not enjoyed listening to and creating music. Cobain’s death was mourned by his fans all over the world with a lot of sympathy and deliberations about his condition as he died.
3) Jim Morrison
James Douglas “Jim” Morrison is regarded as one of the most influential rock artists of all time. Morrison was born to a semi-nomadic military family. His parents were known to not use physical punishment on their children and instead used the military tradition known as “dressing down” where they yelled their children until they were reduced to tears and recognized their shortcomings. Once Morrison graduated he cut off most contact with his family. Morrison formed the band Doors, in the summer of 1965 in Venice, California. This was also the time during which he developed alcohol dependency. Morrison’s death was a much-discussed about. The infamous picture of Morrison lying dead in a bathtub and its interpretations thus became a part of popular media and many films. Morrison’s death took place in Paris and though the reason was reported to be heart failure, the real reason is still unknown as no autopsy was performed. Morrison had described going for long walks in the city alone. After his death, his notebook of poetry was released called the Paris Journal with some depressing poetry.
Club 27 is a mystery to all of us, some say it is linked to Illuminati or some secret societies. Even after being disproved by many researchers, some of the unknown facts and mysterious deaths of artists at the age of 27, still cause unrest within the people.
