A National Award winner, 6 times Filmfare Award winner and recipient of the Padma Shri in 2014, Bollywood actress Vidya Balan is one of the most competent actors that are present in the Indian Cinema. She, alongside talented actress Kangana Ranaut, is one of the actors that started the trend of women-centric films.
Always have a unique connection with acting, she started her career at a very early age of 16 in Ekta Kapoor’s sitcom show “Hum Paanch”. Although she acted in the show for one season only, the experience she gained in the show was invaluable to her. Vidya Balan primary reason for not going ahead with her role was because she was looking to make a name for herself in the Film Industry rather than the Television Industry.
She tried to find opportunities to kick start her career in films and finally got the role in 2003 released Bengali film “Bhalo Theko”. With her supreme abilities, she straightaway won an Anandalok Purashkar for Best Actress. She then went on to make her Bollywood debut in 2005 alongside Saif Ali Khan in the film “Parineeta”. With the help of Parineeta, Vidya truly announced herself to the audience and the film fraternity. It also helped her in winning her very first Filmfare Award. She then went on to do some memorable films like- Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Guru, Heyy Babyy, Bhool Bhulaiya, Halla Bol, Paa, Ishqiya and No One Killed Jessica. She won numerous accolades and appreciation for her acting in these films.
By this time Vidya Balan had already established herself as one of the leading actresses in Bollywood. Then came “The Dirty Picture”. The film was roughly based on the life of South Indian actress “Silk Smitha”, who was portrayed by Vidya in the film. With her epic portrayal of Silk Smitha, Vidya not only won awards, but she also earned the respect of the audience and experts alike. She went on to win the National Award for Best Actress and Filmfare Best Actress for the film. She then followed this up with her film ‘Kahaani’. She again managed to win the heart of her audiences and the film punched above its weight on the Box Office and laid the path for many Women-centric films to work on the Box Office.
These two films helped Vidya Balan in propelling to new heights and made her one of the most sought after celebrities in not only Bollywood but the whole of India. Last she was seen in 2017 in the film “Tumhari Sullu”. It was another film of hers which won her a lot of appreciation for her terrific portrayal of a housewife that has to overcome many hindrances to work. In 2019, she is already seen in Telugu films “N.T.R: Kathanayakudu” and “N.T.R: Mahanayakudu”. She will also be seen in “Mission Mangal”, a film based upon the exploits of the scientists ISRO who contributed to Mars Orbiter Mission. The film is all set to release on Independence Day. She will also be seen making her Tamil film debut in the film “Nerkonda Paarvai”, a remake of the Bollywood film ‘Pink’.
